Michael Blutman
Conductor
Concert Band
Michael Blutman maintains a versatile career as a trumpeter and music educator. A graduate of The Juilliard School and the University of Maryland with degrees in trumpet performance, some of his performing and recording credits include: Paragon Ragtime Orchestra; the National, Baltimore, Albany, Hartford, New Haven, Harrisburg, and American symphony orchestras; Orpheus Chamber Orchestra; Orchestra of St. Luke’s; American Ballet Theater; Broadway’s Phantom of the Opera; Sting; David Bowie’s band; and the Jonathan Batiste Jazz Band.
Michael has especially enjoyed his special relationship with Rick Benjamin’s Paragon Ragtime Orchestra, including: recording six albums under the very well-tuned ears of 14x-Grammy-winning, legendary producer and recording engineer Judith Sherman; being featured on the Everyone Loves Joplin episode of PBS’s series Now Hear This; silent film performances of films by Chaplin, Keaton, Lloyd, Fairbanks, and others in historic theaters; special performances focused on George M. Cohan, Joplin, the composers of “Black Manhattan,” and others; and providing clinics at universities and state music educator conferences. In that ensemble, Michael performs on a more than 100-year-old cornet.
Some of Michael’s educational roles have included: band director, chamber music coach, jazz ensemble director and music theory and composition instructor for the Jericho School District; professor at Ithaca College and Five Towns College; conductor for the Long Island Youth Orchestra’s 2026 Asia Tour; department co-chair, jazz director, chamber music coach, and teacher at Usdan Summer Camp for the Arts; coordinator and teaching artist for East Meadow’s Fusing Culture and Curriculum interdisciplinary arts program; clinician for over thirty school districts, colleges, music educator conferences, and professional development conferences; and artist-in-residence for Nassau Suffolk Performing Arts, where he is excited to take on a new role beginning in the 2026-2027 season as music director of the Concert Band.
A published author in the International Trumpet Guild journal and NYSSMA’s School Music News, Michael and his brother Steven also co-founded Pinnacle Music Press, where they authored its Festival Sight Reading series.
