Dave Stevens
Artist in Residence
David Stevens brings a unique blend of experience as a musician, educator, and nonprofit leader. His journey in music began at an early age when he became captivated by the sound of the French horn. Unable to read notes, David taught himself to play by listening to his family's vinyl records and figuring out the music by ear. By ninth grade he began formal studies with Dorothy Katz, whose mentorship not only shaped him as a musician but also inspired the educator he would become. Katz taught him to always recognize and nurture the greatness within every student.
Just one year later, at 16, David won his first orchestral audition and earned a position with The Civic Orchestra of Chicago, the training orchestra of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He later studied with renowned Chicago Symphony musicians Dale Clevenger and Arnold Jacobs. Throughout his performing career, David has appeared with the Orquesta Sinfónica de Tenerife, Orquesta Sinfónica de Galicia, the Honolulu Symphony, and the Memphis Symphony. As a guest soloist, he has performed throughout the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, India, Indonesia, China, Hong Kong, Chicago, and Long Island.
For more than 35 years, David has shared his passion for music as both a public school band director and private instructor. His students, ranging in age from 7 to 80, have gone on to participate in All-State and national festivals, NYO-USA, Brevard, Tanglewood, and prestigious pre-college programs, with many continuing their studies at leading universities and conservatories. Former students have built successful careers as performers, educators, composers, and recording engineers.
David's commitment to music extends beyond the classroom and stage. He serves on the boards of the Pierrot Summer Music Festival and the Long Island Festival Orchestra and was a founding board member of the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra of New York, helping grow the organization from 15 members into one that serves more than 1,000 students and families.
Above all, David is most proud of his two greatest inspirations; his children, Leah and Michael.
